Distinctive Features: Wide dome-shaped shell, cream base with red-orange spots, prominent eye stalks, tucked legs
Condition: Preserved, dried, protective packaging included
Display: Shown on wood block stand
Each piece: Naturally unique in spotting pattern and shell dimensions

    What Makes This Specimen Special

    Dome Shell Structure
Distinctive rounded helmet-like carapace. Wide from side to side, arched from front to back. Creates dome or box shape unlike typical flat crabs.

Box crabs named for ability to completely retract legs and claws under shell. Forms protective "box" when threatened. This defensive adaptation creates unique appearance.

    Spotted Pattern
Cream, beige, or tan base shell color. Red to orange spots distributed across carapace surface. Spot size, intensity, and distribution varies naturally between specimens.

Pattern serves as camouflage in sandy ocean floor habitats. Natural coloring preserved through preparation.

    Prominent Eye Stalks
Eyes positioned on extended stalks at front of shell. Allow vision while body remains protected under dome. Distinctive facial feature visible when viewing specimen from front.

    Tucked Leg Structure
Legs and claws fold completely beneath body. Creates smooth outline. Light cream or pale coloring on appendages. Delicate jointed structure visible.

    Visual Character

Almost resembles smooth stone or egg shape from above due to rounded profile. Spotted pattern creates natural art across surface. Front-facing eyes give personality and focal point.

Wider than long. Sits low on surface due to tucked legs. Compact three-dimensional form.

Wide profile requires adequate surface width for display. Relatively flat height due to tucked legs. Stable positioning on flat surfaces.

Display options: Directly on shelf or desk, on wood platform (as shown), under glass dome, in shadow box, within specimen collection cases.

    Preservation Details

Real crab cleaned, preserved, dried. Shell dome structure maintained. Leg position set during preservation (cannot reposition). Natural spot pattern and colors retained.

Protective packaging prevents shell damage during shipping. Arrives ready to display.

Not alive. Not edible. Biological specimen for collection only.

    Care Instructions

Cleaning: Dust gently with soft brush. Dome shape has fewer crevices than angular crabs making cleaning easier.

Display Environment: Dry location, room temperature, avoid direct sunlight (preserves spot colors).

Handling: Lift by shell body, not eye stalks or legs. Dome structure relatively sturdy but appendages delicate.

Longevity: Properly stored specimens last indefinitely. Protect from moisture, pests, physical damage.

    Placement Options

Home: Curiosity cabinets, natural history shelves, desk displays, bookcase styling, coastal decor.

Professional: Marine biology offices, natural history collections, science classrooms, aquarium displays.

Collections: Box crab specialists, shape variation collections (dome vs flat crabs), spotted pattern specimens, defensive adaptation displays.

    Collector Appeal

Box crabs (Calappa family) sought for distinctive dome shape differentiating them from typical crab forms. Shame-faced crab nickname refers to tucked, hidden appearance resembling embarrassment.

Rounded sculptural form appeals beyond typical angular crab specimens. Spotted pattern adds decorative visual interest.
