The piece belongs to a line of reductive figurative metalwork in which the human body is described by contour rather than mass. Iron is the material that makes this possible at small scale. It holds a fine line without needing a thick armature underneath, so a figure of tabletop size reads as a drawn silhouette instead of a solid block.
The surface takes light unevenly along its worked edges. Seen against a wall, the outline sharpens or softens depending on where the piece sits relative to a light source, and the figure gains or loses definition through the day as that light moves. Six designs make up the set, each a separate posture. A taper is required and is not supplied.
