In the royal courts of South Asia, an elephant with its trunk raised was not decoration.
It was a statement of arrival.
Caparisoned elephants - dressed in ornate ceremonial blankets for processions, coronations, and state occasions - were the most deliberate visual declaration a court could make. The trunk raised upward was the posture of honor, of abundance announced rather than concealed.
The Durbar Pair borrows that posture and that ornament directly.
Two elephants. One larger, one smaller. Both standing with trunks raised vertically - the position that every tradition from Vastu to feng shui converges on as the correct one for a home entrance or living space. The raised trunk faces upward. What it gathers, it keeps.
The bodies are deep peacock teal resin - a speckled, slightly mottled finish that shifts between blue and green depending on the light and the angle. Smooth. Architectural. The legs are elongated columns. The silhouette is simplified to the point where the form reads as both ancient and completely contemporary.
The caparison is where the detail lives.
Each elephant carries a rectangular decorative panel across its back - the ceremonial blanket of the royal procession, translated into resin. The panels are densely worked with hand-applied spiral rose rosettes in amber and dark gold tones, each rosette individually formed, pressed into the surface in overlapping rows. Amber crystal cabochons are embedded throughout — catching light at irregular intervals across the panel. A gold border frames each panel edge. Gold detail lines the inner ear of both figures.
The large elephant stands 30cm tall. The small stands 27.5cm. The difference in height is deliberate - a pair of identical objects is a matched set. A pair with variation is a composition.
Together they occupy approximately 24cm of surface width. They work on a console, a sideboard, a mantle, a wide windowsill, the flanks of an entryway. They work anywhere two figures facing slightly inward create the sense of a threshold being held.
This is the pair that makes a surface look like it was styled rather than filled.
