Anubis is the jackal god of ancient Egypt, protector of tombs and overseer of embalming. The best-known sculptural treatment of the god is the Anubis Shrine, found in the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. It shows a black jackal mounted on a gilded chest, positioned to guard the treasury behind it.
Black carried a specific meaning in Egyptian art. It referred to the dark, fertile silt left behind by the Nile flood, and it stood for regeneration rather than mourning. This figure keeps that color logic. It is cast in synthetic resin and finished in black, and it doubles as a storage piece, echoing the god's original role as keeper of what was set aside.
