Luminous Resin Landscape Stone Sculpture

Cast resin with a luminous surface finish. Floor-standing format. Four forms: A, B, C, and D. Freestanding, no assembly required.

The piece follows the Chinese scholars' rock, or gongshi, a form collected from the Tai Lake region and elsewhere from the Tang dynasty onward and set in studies, courtyards, and gardens. Connoisseurs judged these stones against four named criteria recorded by the Song dynasty painter Mi Fu: thinness, perforation, channelling, and wrinkling. A stone that met them was read as a landscape in miniature, a mountain range compressed to the scale of a room. The placement of such stones sits within feng shui as a cultural and aesthetic tradition.

The resin body reproduces the pitted, channelled surface of the original limestone, with openings that pass through the mass rather than stopping at the surface. Profile shifts considerably from one viewing angle to the next, which is characteristic of the form. A luminous finish is applied across the surface: it takes up ambient light through the day and releases a soft afterglow once a room darkens, fading gradually rather than switching off. No power source or wiring is involved.
