Enamel over metal is a finishing method rather than a coating. Color is applied to the cast body and set, leaving a glossy layer that sits above the alloy instead of soaking into it. Where the casting defines an edge, the color field stops cleanly at that edge, so the boundary between enamel and bare metal stays sharp rather than feathering. The method has been used on decorative metalwork for centuries for exactly that reason: it holds a hard line that paint will not.

The body is cast as a single piece with polished alloy left exposed along the raised contours. The two surfaces behave differently under light. Enamel holds an even color that stays flat from most viewing angles, while the exposed metal picks up direct light in narrow bright lines that trace the form. Color runs across the broad panels rather than the whole shape, which keeps the outline legible from across a room.
