Golden Lion Resin Sculpture

The lion recurs as a guardian figure across traditions that had no contact with one another. Paired stone lions flank entrances in Chinese architecture. The winged lion of Saint Mark stands over the Piazzetta in Venice. The lion hunt reliefs carved for Ashurbanipal at Nineveh, now held in the British Museum, date to the seventh century BCE. The animal survives in decorative sculpture for the same reason it survives in heraldry: the silhouette stays recognizable at any scale, and the associations attached to it need no explanation.

This is a minimalist reading of that subject rather than a naturalistic one. Surface detail is reduced to the planes that define the head, mane, and stance, so the form resolves as shape before it resolves as animal. The gold finish is applied over cast resin and behaves as a reflective layer, throwing warm light back along the raised planes while the recessed areas hold shadow. Seen from across a room the piece reads as a bright mass; seen close, the individual facets separate.
