Static magnets alone cannot hold an object in a stable hover. A magnet pushed away from another simply tips and falls, a result formalized in physics as Earnshaw's theorem. Spin corrects for this. Once turning, the top's own rotational momentum resists the sideways drift that would otherwise collapse the magnetic field, holding it in place above the base for as long as the spin lasts. This mechanism was first patented for magnetic levitation tops in the early 1990s and remains the basis for how the format works today.
The base sits flat on a desk or shelf. The top is given a manual spin by hand, then guided into the magnetic field above the base, where it settles into a stable hover a short distance above the surface and continues rotating in place until the spin winds down. No power source is involved at any stage. Levitation and rotation both run on the initial hand spin and the fixed magnetic field built into the base.
